The Mine Health and Safety Act requires eye protection wherever flying particles, chemical splash, radiation or dust is present. This means safety glasses or goggles across all active work areas, full-face shields for grinding and chemical splash, and welding visors for welding operations. All eye protection must comply with SANS and EN 166 standards.
EN 166 is the European standard for personal eye protection, widely referenced in South Africa. It governs frame and lens testing for impact resistance, UV protection, optical clarity and liquid resistance. Safety glasses and goggles sold in South Africa should carry the EN 166 marking to be considered compliant PPE on industrial and mine sites.
Safety glasses have rigid side shields but leave gaps around the face — suitable for flying particle protection. Goggles seal completely around the eye socket, required where chemical splash, fine dust or vapour exposure is present. Face shields cover the full face and are needed for grinding, welding and chemical decanting — but must be worn with safety glasses underneath.
